More Information on False Positive Noninvasive Prenatal Testing
A recent New York Times report stated that positive results from noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for serious, deadly genetic conditions are “usually” wrong. The report reviewed data from some of the top companies that administer NIPT, like Quest Diagnostics, Bio-Reference Laboratories, LabCorp, and Illumina, and found that up to 85% of positive results for the following conditions were false positives:
- DiGeorge syndrome
- Cri-du-chat syndrome
- Prader-Willi and Angelman syndromes
- Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome
- 1p36 deletion
Many of these companies are reportedly advertising their tests—to both patients and doctors—without offering data on their accuracy or mentioning false positives.
