On July 11, 2023, federal regulators ordered Bank of America to pay $150 million in fines related in part to its alleged practice of opening accounts for customers without their knowledge or consent. The director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau stated that “Bank of America wrongfully withheld credit card rewards, double-dipped on fees, and opened accounts without consent. These practices are illegal and undermine consumer trust.” The accounts in question include checking and savings accounts as well as credit cards.
