GKN Aerospace Chemical Tank Risks 50,000 Residents

On Thursday, May 21, a GKN Aerospace chemical tank located in Garden Grove, California began to overheat, posing a risk of a chemical leak or explosion. The tank contains methyl methacrylate, a chemical used to make plastics that can cause respiratory and other health problems upon exposure. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in response, and about 50,000 residents living nearby were asked to evacuate. As a result of efforts to cool the tank and reduce its pressure, a catastrophic explosion risk no longer exists, but officials still believe the tank poses a risk to public safety.
