Girard Sharp Appointed Co-Lead Counsel in Accellion Data Breach Litigation

Judge Edward J. Davila of the Northern District of California on February 10, 2023 appointed Girard Sharp and Susman Godfrey to serve as co-lead counsel in the Accellion Data Breach Litigation, after hearing briefing and argument from several competing applicants. The litigation follows a data breach incident occurring between December 2020 and January 2021, in which threat actors exploited vulnerabilities in Accellion’s File Transfer Application system, leading to the theft of sensitive information in files loaded to Accellion’s FTA.

Girard Sharp also leads the related case against the Regents of the University of California, one of Accellion’s customers that used the compromised file transfer application. In that state court action on behalf of the UC data breach victims—who range from students and their family members to current and retired employees and their dependents and beneficiaries—the representative Plaintiffs allege the hack occurred because of the negligence of both Accellion and UC Regents.
