Content Creators File Complaint Against Major Browser Extension Companies

As of January 2025, complaints have been filed against PayPal, Klarna, and Microsoft in connection with this matter. Plaintiffs allege that the browser extensions allow companies like PayPal, Microsoft, and Klarna to take credit for sales referrals from marketers and content creators. Specifically:

• Honey and other browser extensions override legitimate affiliate marketing cookies during online purchases, allowing PayPal and other companies to claim credit for sales referrals originally attributed to marketers.

• Honey and other browser extensions use pop-ups and simulated referral clicks to trigger cookie replacements, often without the consumer’s knowledge or consent.

• Honey and other browser extensions exploit the “last-click attribution” model, which gives credit for a sale to the most recent referral, to redirect commissions from marketers to itself even in instances where it provides no discounts to consumers.
