More About the Equifax Credit Score Misreporting Investigation

Equifax is a national consumer reporting agency that assembles and evaluates credit, public record, and other consumer information into consumer reports or “credit reports.” According to recent reports, Equifax confirmed on August 2, 2022 that due to a “glitch” in its technology, the company provided inaccurate credit scores to prospective lenders to consumers who applied for credit in the spring of 2022.

As reported on CNN, the errors were significant enough to have caused around 300,000 would-be borrowers to be wrongfully denied credit or issued loans at a higher rate. The company has not specified exactly how many consumers were affected, but a June 1 alert from housing agency Freddie Mac to its clients said Equifax told the agency that about 12% of all credit scores released from March 17 to April 6 may have been inaccurate.
