Totally Implanted Venous-Access Devices (TIVAD) are implantable ports that deliver intravenous (I.V.) medications or fluids directly into a patient’s veins. They are typically used in patients who require long-term or repeated intravenous access. Certain TIVADs are known to malfunction and leak medicine into the body at an uncontrolled rate. As a result, patients become susceptible to serious injuries or death. Some of these injuries include:
- Infection
- Sepsis
- Erosion of the TIVAD through the skin
- Internal bleeding
- Pressure around the heart
- Cardiac arrhythmia
- Cancer advancement when the TIVAD breaks or leaks medication

Several different companies manufacture TIVAD ports. A common reported defect is that the device may fracture while it’s implanted, creating a risk of uncontrolled leaking and a risk of the device migrating to different areas of the body. Another reportedly common defect exists within the material of the port itself. Vortex Ports, a popular TIVAD, is made of barium sulfate and silicone. Barium sulfate reportedly can degrade the silicone over time, causing the device to break or leak.
